These are absolutely gorgeous figurines of the Four Heroes from the famous Chinese legend Journey to the West, which is about a Buddhist holy monk who was given a task by the Bodhisattva Kuan Yin, on instruction from the Buddha to bring back Buddhist religious scriptures called sutras from the Western Paradise (India) to China during the Tang Dynasty. The Buddhist monk is known as Xuan Zang or Tripitaka and he is accompanied by his three disciples to protect him during the journey, namely Sun Wu Kong (Monkey), Zhu Ba Jie (Pigsy) and Sha Wu Jing (Sandy). The horse Xuan Zang is riding on is a dragon prince. The pilgrims face many obstacles, calamities, monsters and evil demons of all sorts during their mission, and along the way, they learn to work together and grow spiritually. After 14 tough years and over a hundred thousand miles, they reach the Western Paradise and obtained the sutras. The Buddha rewards them with immortal life for their loyalty and hard work shown during the arduous journey.
